Brandy Norwood, known professionally as Brandy, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. She began her career as a child, performing in talent shows and later landing a role on the television series "Thea" in 1993. Brandy's breakthrough came with her self-titled debut album in 1994, which sold over six million copies worldwide and garnered her two Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Her smooth R&B vocals and youthful charm quickly made her a prominent figure in the music industry.
In 1996, Brandy starred in the popular TV show "Moesha," which became UPN's most-watched show and ran for six seasons, solidifying her status as a teen idol. Her acting success did not slow her musical career; she released her second album, "Never Say Never," in 1998, which became her biggest-selling album, selling over 16 million copies worldwide. The album included the chart-topping single "The Boy Is Mine," a duet with Monica that spent a record-breaking thirteen weeks atop the Billboard charts and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In 2024, Brandy and Monica featured on a remix of Ariana Grande's song of the same name.
Throughout the 2000s, Brandy continued to release successful albums and took on various acting roles, including a starring role in the TV movie "Cinderella" alongside Whitney Houston. Her subsequent albums, such as "Full Moon," which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and "Afrodisiac," which received critical acclaim, showcased her evolving sound and continued relevance in the R&B genre. In 2005, a compilation album titled "The Best of Brandy" was released, reaching the top 30 in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In recent years, Brandy has experienced a resurgence in her career with the release of her seventh studio album, "B7," in 2020, which received critical acclaim for its introspective lyrics and innovative production. Additionally, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "Chicago," and joined the cast of the ABC music drama series "Queens." Furthermore, she took on various reality show roles, including being a judge on "America's Got Talent," a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars," and serving as a mentor on the talent show "Majors & Minors." In 2024, Brandy reprised her role as Cinderella in Disney's "Descendants: The Rise of Red" and starred in the horror and thriller "The Front Room."
