Ben Caldecott Biography
Dr. Ben Caldecott is the founding director of the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group at the University of Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and serves as Associate Professor of Sustainable Finance, the first endowed professorship in the field at a major research university. He is also a Supernumerary Fellow at Oriel College, Oxford. Caldecott has more than 20 years of experience at the intersection of finance, policy, and research, collaborating with boards, senior management, policymakers, regulators, and civil society to address energy, climate, environmental, and sustainability issues.
Caldecott has contributed significant research to sustainable finance, pioneering the concept of stranded assets and serving as a leading academic in this area. His edited volumes, "Stranded Assets and the Environment: Risk, Resilience and Opportunity" and "Stranded Assets: Developments in Finance and Investment," are widely referenced by scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. He has advanced the field of spatial finance by integrating geospatial data and analytics into financial theory and practice. Caldecott also co-authored the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting and developed the concept of the Carbon Removal Budget. His expertise has been cited in legal proceedings, including cases in the Federal Court of Australia and the High Court of England and Wales.
Caldecott has engaged extensively in public service and policy. He was seconded part-time to the UK Cabinet Office to serve as COP26 Strategy Advisor for Finance. He serves on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as Coordinating Lead Author for finance in Working Group III for the Seventh Assessment Report. Caldecott also contributed to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Climate-Related Market Risk Subcommittee, participating in the first comprehensive assessment of climate risk to the US financial system. Apolitical recognized him as one of the "100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy."
Caldecott is the founder and Co-Chair of the Global Research Alliance for Sustainable Finance and Investment, an alliance of research universities advancing academic research on sustainable finance. He is the founding director and principal investigator of the UK Centre for Greening Finance & Investment, established as the national center to accelerate the adoption of climate and environmental data and analytics by financial institutions. Caldecott also leads the Sustainable Finance Theme at The Alan Turing Institute. He has secured significant funding from foundations, research councils, governments, and industry for his work.
Before his academic career, Caldecott was a vice president at investment bank Climate Change Capital, where he managed the firm's research center and advised on policy-driven markets for the net zero carbon transition. He also worked at Bloomberg New Energy Finance as head of government advisory. Caldecott has more than 15 years of boardroom experience as a non-executive director across listed companies, financial institutions, public bodies, and charities, supporting organizations in risk management, strategy development, and governance. His board and advisory roles have included the UK Climate Change Committee's Adaptation Committee, DBS Bank's Board Sustainability Committee, UK Export Finance's Export Guarantees Advisory Council, and serving as a trustee of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
