Albert Bourla Biography
Dr. Albert Bourla is the chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer, a global biopharmaceutical company. Bourla holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. from the Veterinary School of Aristotle University. He began his career at Pfizer in the Animal Health division and has held several senior positions across various markets and disciplines. As chief operating officer, Bourla oversaw drug development, manufacturing, sales, and strategy, and led the restructuring of Pfizer, including the spin-off of its consumer health care business. He also served as group president of Pfizer Innovative Health, overseeing business groups such as Consumer Healthcare, Inflammation and Immunology, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Rare Disease, and Vaccines.
Upon becoming chief executive officer, Bourla accelerated Pfizer's transformation into a science-driven company, focusing on research and development and digital innovation. Under his leadership, Pfizer has pursued strategies in oncology, internal medicine, inflammation and immunology, and vaccines. The acquisition of Seagen expanded the company's pipeline in cancer therapeutics. Bourla's international experience, having lived and worked in multiple cities and led teams across five continents, has informed his approach to global healthcare and equitable access to medicines and vaccines.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bourla directed Pfizer's efforts to develop a safe and effective vaccine, investing more than $2 billion at risk. He documented this process in his book, "Moonshot: Inside Pfizer's Nine-Month Race to Make the Impossible Possible," which became a Wall Street Journal bestseller. The book received recognition as a Bronze Medalist in the Axiom Awards and as a finalist for the National Jewish Book Awards.
Bourla has received recognition from business and public health organizations, including being named among Fortune's Most Powerful People in Business, Time's 100 Most Influential People in Health, and CEO of the Year by CNN Business. He has been ranked America's top CEO in the pharmaceuticals sector by Institutional Investor magazine. Bourla serves as chair of the Pfizer Foundation and co-chair of the Partnership for New York City. He is president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, a director on multiple boards including Pfizer and PhRMA, a trustee of the United States Council for International Business, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Business Roundtable, the Business Council, and the New York City Mayor's Corporate Council.
