William Close is an installation artist and musician who has developed over 100 new types of musical instruments. He is the inventor of the majestic stringed instrument, The Earth Harp, the world's largest stringed instrument. Other instruments designed by Close include The Drum Orb, The Percussion Jacket, The Aquatar and The Wing Harp.
William Close is the founder and artistic director of The Earth Harp Collective. The group works with Close’s unique designs to create music-based stage shows that push the envelope of the musical experience. Close’s work explores the connection between architecture and music. Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote “architecture is frozen music”, Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument. He has developed two "Symphonic Houses" working with architects to build the musical instruments into the architecture turning the house themselves into musical instruments.
William studied sculpture and sound design at the Art Institute of Chicago. His multidisciplinary approach to sculpture, music and installation art blossomed into a new genre of music making designs. His installations and performances have been experienced and adored by audiences throughout the world.
Combining sculpture, installation art and music, the Earth Harp has been installed around the world, exploring the relationship between architecture and music. The body of instrument rests on the stage and the strings travel out over the audience attaching to the back of the theater, turning the theater, concert hall, architecture or landscape into the instrument. The long strings are played with violin rosin covered gloves. The player runs his hands along the strings creating beautiful cello like tones.
William Close has strung the Earth Harp to hundreds of world-renowned buildings including the Space Needle in Seattle, the Coliseum in Rome, the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center to name a few. In addition, he has strung temples and historical sites from Hong Kong to Vietnam and India to South Africa, “freeing” the music from these iconic structures. Close and The Earth Harp Collective’s much anticipated album, has just been released. This album reflects the heart of their sound.
