Velvet Revolver Biography

Velvet Revolver is an American hard rock band that formed in 2004 when former members of Guns N' Roses, Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, decided to get together and form a new group. The trio recruited Dave Kushner from Wasted Youth, and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots to round out the band. 2004 marked the release of the band's debut album, “Contraband,” which met with positive reviews but left fans of their previous bands somewhat skeptical. The album spawned the song “Slither,” with earned the band a Grammy Award in 2005 for 'Best Hard Rock Performance.' The band followed up with “Libertad” in 2007 and embarked on a tour with Alice in Chains. Just as the band was beginning to develop a following, Weiland quit to re-join Stone Temple Pilots in 2008. Velvet Revolver has been unable to fill Weiland's shoes since and the band has been on an indefinite hiatus.

When Guns N' Roses parted ways, McKagan, Slack and Sorum remained friends and often worked with one another on side projects; each musician helped the other out on solo albums, and it was from this collaboration that the trio got the idea to continue to work together. McKagan had been friends with Kushner for years and introduced him to Slash and the fit was instant, the quartet was all on the same page musically. However, it proved much more difficult for the trio to find the right kind of fit for a lead singer. McKagan had always thought Weiland had what it took and after many auditions, McKagan contacted Weiland directly. Weiland was hesitant at first, but as Stone Temple Pilots had broken up a year earlier he was free to embark on a new project.

While Weiland was recording music for the group's debut album he was arrested for drug possession, which became a recurring problem for the band. The band pushed ahead and signed with RCA Records. When the single “Slither” debuted at #1 the Billboard 200, the band knew they had something good.

The band went on to win numerous awards and also record music for the films “The Hulk” and 'The Fantasic Four.” Velvet Revolver hit the road in 2005 to support '“Contraband,” and toured for almost two years. Around this time various members of the band began to abuse drugs and alcohol, which affected the stability of the band.

In 2007 the band were dealt a blow when Weiland decided to enter a rehab program, and was arrested for drug possession again. 2008 saw Velvet Revolver tour the U.S. and the U.K., and Weiland's substance abuse became so problematic that the remaining members of the band decided to fire him. Their last show with Weiland was played in Netherlands on the U.K. leg of their tour. Weiland reunited with former band members of Stone Temple Pilots in 2008, while Velvet Revolver continued to search for a new frontman. Despite the band members’ solo projects, Velvet Revolver reunited for a one-off performance with Weiland at a benefit concert for the late John O'Brien, in 2012. Currently Velvet Revolver are working on new material and still searching for a lead vocalist.
