Tony Elumelu Biography
Anthony Onyemaechi Elumelu, CFR, is a Nigerian economist, entrepreneur, investor, banker, and philanthropist recognized for his impact on Africa's financial and business sectors. Elumelu is known for advancing the philosophy of Africapitalism, which emphasizes the role of the African private sector as a driver of economic growth and development across the continent.
Elumelu began his career in banking, leading a group of investors to acquire Standard Trust Bank and serving as its chief executive officer. Under his leadership, the bank underwent significant transformation. He later orchestrated the merger of Standard Trust Bank with United Bank for Africa, creating a pan-African financial institution with operations in 20 African countries as well as the United Kingdom, France, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. United Bank for Africa is noted as the only African bank with a commercial deposit-taking presence in the United States.
Following his tenure at United Bank for Africa, Elumelu founded Heirs Holdings, an investment holding company with interests in financial services, power generation, oil and gas, agribusiness, real estate, and hospitality. He is also the founder and chairman of Heirs Oil & Gas, which holds assets including Nigerian oil block OML17. Heirs Holdings has a controlling stake in Transcorp, Nigeria's largest listed conglomerate.
Elumelu established the Tony Elumelu Foundation, an Africa-based and African-funded philanthropy focused on entrepreneurship. The foundation's Entrepreneurship Programme has provided funding to thousands of entrepreneurs, supporting job creation and revenue generation across Africa. The foundation is recognized as a significant private-sector-led development initiative on the continent.
Elumelu has been included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He serves on the Global Advisory Board of the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and USAID's Private Capital Group. He has received the All-Africa Business Leaders Awards Philanthropist of the Year Award and an honorary Doctor of Business degree from Bayero University Kano. Elumelu is frequently cited in discussions on African economic development, entrepreneurship, and private-sector-led growth.
