John Maggs Biography

As a journalist covering the politics and policies that determine national economic policy, John Maggs has an up-close view of the Washington decision-makers who work to maintain the health of the American economy. As a correspondent for National Journal, he is the chief voice on the state of the economy at the highly respected and widely read weekly political magazine based in Washington.  With a reputation for unbiased analysis, he has spent the last nine years covering the ups and downs of the economy and the give and take that creates policy in this all-important aspect of American life. While economists break down the numbers, he brings a unique point of view to his speeches, combining a deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the economy with his access and knowledge of the politics that affect jobs, housing, and the stock market. With the center of economic power migrating from Wall Street to Washington, John Maggs speaks with great humor and insight into the goings-on in both economic epicenters.

The Economy: Sometimes Messy, Always Fascinating. A regular panelist on Washington Week with Gwen Ifill, and appearing frequently on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR, Maggs provides a forecast of legislative and executive actions and a plain-English explanation of what the government is actually doing. Since the financial and economic crises arrived in 2007, he has been one of the most respected and evenhanded commentators on the historic events that are remaking the U.S. economy. He has written extensively on the banking crisis and the government's rescue effort; the housing crash; the impact of the economic downturn on manufacturing, services and international trade; and the disparate impact of these events in different regions. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he wrote a number of stories warning of the housing bubble and the explosion of household debt, and the possibility that we might be facing a worldwide economic crisis. In 2005, Maggs wrote a major piece sifting the evidence for the possibility that the U.S. stock market had entered another twenty-year bear market.

Before his current assignment, he spent three years travelling the country and reporting on local government innovation for a National Journal feature called "Laboratories of Democracy." Stories ranged from community courts in Vermont to municipal broadband in California to employer-run daycare in Washington State.

Covering International Commerce. Before coming to National Journal, Maggs was the senior reporter in Washington for the New York-based Journal of Commerce, a daily business newspaper. As the chief international economic reporter, he travelled the world covering international trade negotiations and summit meetings, reporting extensively from Europe, Latin America, and East Asia. Major stories included the U.S.-Japan trade wars of the 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the creation of the World Trade Organization. As a member of the board of governors of the National Press Club, he hosted lunches for newsmakers and other dignitaries, broadcast on television and radio. Among other freelance projects, he helped produce a documentary in PBS' Frontline series on money in politics.
