Elvis Crespo Biography

Elvis Crespo was born on July 30, 1971 in New York City, raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, and is a Grammy Award winning merengue singer. Crespo's music is heavily influenced by the culture he grew up in, and the merengue music he was surrounded by as a child. At the age of six he began singing lessons and went on to perform with the Willie Berrios Orchestra, the Lenny Perez Orchestra for two years, and the Toño Rosario Orchestra for six years before joining Grupo Mania.

Crespo came to fame when he joined the band Grupo Mania in Puerto Rico in the 1990s. After national success with his band, Crespo decided to branch out on his own and embark on a solo career in 1998.

His debut album, “Suavemente” was a huge success at home and in the U.S. The lead single and title track off the album, “Suavemente,” earned Crespo the Best Male Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year Award from Billboard magazine. The album also topped the Billboard Latin Albums and Tropical Albums charts.

His second album, “Píntame,” was released in 1999 and was his second consecutive album to reach #1 on the Billboard Latin Albums and Tropical Albums charts. It also reached #22 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The album received the Grammy Award for Best Merengue Album.

“Wow! Flash,” his third album, was issued in 2000. It was another #1 hit on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart, while peaking at #5 on the Latin Albums chart. In 2002 he released, “Urbano,” which again topped the Tropical Albums chart. It also reached #4 on the Latin Albums chart.

“Saboréalo,” Crespo’s fifth album, was released in 2004. It became his fifth consecutive #1 album on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart while also reaching #3 on the Latin Albums chart.

Crespo's sixth album, “Regresó el Jefe,” arrived in 2007 on Sony Music, spawning the hit single, “La Foto Se Me Borró.” It was his first album not to reach #1 on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart, peaking at #2. The album featured special appearances by fellow Puerto Rican merengue singer Giselle, and Dominican singers Los Hermanos Rosario as well as a new merengue group produced by Crespo called Zone D'Tambora. “Indestructible,” released in 2010, managed to reach #3 on the Tropical Albums chart and returned Crespo to the Top 10 of the Latin Albums chart.
