Chip Kelly Biography
Chip Kelly is recognized for his impact on football, particularly for developing high-tempo, high-efficiency offensive systems. Kelly began his coaching career at Columbia, working with defense and special teams, before returning to University of New Hampshire. There, he spent 13 years in roles including offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and running backs coach. During his tenure, he contributed to quarterback Ricky Santos winning the Walter Payton Award and led offenses that averaged more than 400 yards per game in seven of eight seasons.
Kelly advanced to head coach at University of Oregon, where he led the Ducks to a 46-7 record, three consecutive conference championships, and three straight 12-win seasons. Under his leadership, Oregon appeared in Bowl Championship Series games, including the Rose Bowl, BCS National Championship Game, and Fiesta Bowl. Kelly became the first coach in school history to guide the program to three consecutive undisputed conference championships and its first three 12-win seasons. He received recognition with awards such as AP College Football Coach of the Year and Walter Camp Coach of the Year.
In the National Football League, Kelly became the second head coach in league history to win a division title in his first season, as the Philadelphia Eagles captured an NFC East Division Championship. The Eagles won 10 games in each of his first two seasons, with his offense setting a franchise record of 474 points in his second year. Kelly later served as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, where the team improved its rushing offense from 21st to fourth in the league, totaling 2,019 rushing yards. His offensive philosophy, emphasizing pace, precision, and versatility, has influenced both college football and the NFL.
Kelly served as head coach at UCLA, compiling a 35-34 record while overseeing consistent offensive growth. He then joined Ohio State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, contributing to a national championship and directing an offense that averaged 36.3 points per game in four College Football Playoff victories. Kelly was later hired by the Las Vegas Raiders as offensive coordinator before returning to the collegiate ranks, where Northwestern named him offensive coordinator.
