Alien Ant Farm Biography

Alien Ant Farm is an alternative rock band, whose sound is driven by heavy, and often distorted, guitar riffs. The band hail from Riverside, California and achieved mainstream success with their cover of Michael Jackson's song, “Smooth Criminal.” The song went on to become #1 in a number of countries around the world. The band were barely out of high school when they formed in 1996, and consisted of Dryden Mitchell on vocals, Terry Corso on guitar, Tye Zamora on bass, and Mike Cosgrove on drums. 1999 marked the self-release of the band's debut album, “Greatest Hits,” which made so much noise that it earned the band a 'Best Independent Album' Award at the L.A. Music Awards that year. 2000 marked Alien Ant Farm's transformation to the big league after signing with DreamWorks SKG. Their first studio album, and debut for a major, “Anthology” appeared later that year.

2001 marked the band's international smash hit cover, “Smooth Criminal,” which debuted at #1 in Australia and New Zealand, #3 in the U.K., and #1 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. The band followed up with the single “Movies,” which peaked at #5 hit on the U.K. Singles chart. The band then embarked on a tour to support the album. In 2002, the band contributed the track, “Bug Bytes” to the “SpiderMan” soundtrack, which exposed their music to a whole new audience. The band's third offering, “Truant” was released in 2003, which was a commercial failure and dismissed by the critics, in addition, shortly after the release of the album the band's record label closed down. The band's confidence hit an all-time low, their future was in question, in-house fighting emerged, and line-up changes ensued.

By 2005, Corso had left the band and Geffen Records had brought the back catalogue to the band's work. For their next album the band went back to their roots and hired producer Jim Wirt, who they had worked with on their first independent release, “Greatest Hits.” When the album was complete Geffen refused to put it out and legally prevented the band from putting the album out themselves. In retaliation the band hit the road with bootleg copies of the album, which they made available to their fans. Three of the songs off the album: “Wish,” “Courage,” and “These Days” made their way into various video games. As a result Geffen decided to release the album under their Universal Music Enterprises label. The album, “Up in the Attic” finally emerged in 2006. Later that same year, original bassist Tye Zamora left the band to go to college and was replaced by Alex Barreto.

The band remained inactive over the next few years amidst rumors of an “unofficial break-up” and lead singer, Mitchell playing with the band, Send the Sages. Corso and Cosgrove were also seen working on their project, Ghost In The Flesh. 2010 saw Alien Ant Farm reunite with its original line-up and sign with Primary Wave Management. The band's MySpace page featured a number of new songs: “Godlike,” “Yellow Pages,” “High On The Horizon” and “Simpatico.” 2011 marked the band touring across the U.S., supporting MeTalkPretty.
