Rovenia, aka "Dr. Ro," is an award-winning nutritionist, fitness expert, lecturer, media personality, and author of Dr. Ro’s Ten Secrets to Livin’ Healthy. Dr. Ro earned a B.S. in food and nutrition from Virginia State University, a double master’s degree in community nutrition and broadcast journalism from Howard University, and a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences, also from Howard University.
A charismatic media pro, Dr. Ro is known and loved by millions of television fans. She was the host of Black Entertainment Television’s Heart & Soul, the first-ever national health and fitness television show for African-American women. She was the nutrition counselor for Lifetime Live on ABC News and the weekly nutritionist to NBC’s morning show in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Ro was named one of the nation’s top 5 nutritionists by More Magazine and Shop Smart (The quick & easy guide from Consumer Reports). She penned a health column, America’s Nutrition Coach, for the National Newspaper Publishers Association, distributed to 200 African American newspapers nationwide. Dr. Ro has served as the resident nutritionist and blogger for iVillage.com, the leading health source for women and families online, and joined Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey on the Ebony Power 100 List of the Most Influential African Americans in the U.S. in 2010 and 2011. She is the Dr. Oz Show Nutrition Coach who helped over a half-million Americans lose more than 5 million pounds and served on the Medical Advisory Board for the Dr. Oz Show for 7 seasons. She recently joined the Advisory Board at Family Circle Magazine and is columnist to Ebony Magazine’s “Get Fit” and “Health and Wellness” columns.
Dr. Ro was also a health expert for the WHUR Adult Mix Morning Show, the leading adult listening radio station in Washington, D.C., where she hosted a weekly segment called Heads Up on Health with Dr. Ro. In addition, she served as medical correspondent for BET News. Dr. Ro has been featured and quoted widely in print venues, including Ebony, O magazine, Essence, and Self, as well as many major daily newspapers.
Having survived the loss of her mother at age 9 to stomach cancer, she has researched and written extensively about how to break bad health habits - from eating high-calorie comfort foods and resisting exercise to giving up on health goals and taking on the negativity of saboteurs. Dr. Ro says it takes only three weeks to form a new habit - an important note to women striving to replace bad habits with new healthy behaviors.
