Mustafa Suleyman Biography
Mustafa Suleyman is the CEO of Microsoft AI, a new group whose initiatives will include the Copilot chatbot that appears in Windows, Bing, and other products. He is the co-founder of Inflection AI, an AI-first consumer software company launched in 2022. Prior to this, he co-founded and acted as the head of applied AI at DeepMind, an AI company that was later acquired by Google. There, he launched DeepMind Health, building clinician-led technology for the NHS among other partners, and initiated a project that significantly reduced energy usage in Google's data centers. Suleyman transferred to Google full-time in 2019, where he served as VP of AI products & AI policy.
In 2022, he co-founded Inflection AI with Greylock's Reid Hoffman, launching a chatbot named "Pi" for Personal Intelligence. Apart from his entrepreneurial ventures, Suleyman has been an active contributor to the ongoing discussions on the ethics of AI. He established a research unit called DeepMind Ethics & Society to analyze the real-world impacts of AI and promote ethical practice among technologists. His contributions earned him recognition as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence in 2023.
Mustafa Suleyman is also a published author. His book "The Coming Wave, Technology, Power, and the 21st Century's Greatest Dilemma," co-written with researcher Michael Bhaskar, was shortlisted for the 2023 Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award. Despite dropping out of Mansfield College, Oxford at 19, Suleyman has had a significant impact on the tech industry, advocating for redesigning industry incentives to prioritize social responsibility. He has also served on the board of The Economist Group and as a Senior Fellow at The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to his work in tech, Suleyman worked as a policy officer on human rights for Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, and helped establish the Muslim Youth Helpline, a mental health support service for Muslims in the UK.
