Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt is an American historian, author, and Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University.
She is the author of eight books, including the History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier (a National Jewish Book Award winner); Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory; and Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust, 1933–1945, Holocaust: An American Understanding, and Antisemitism: Here and Now.
At Emory she directs the website known as HDOT (Holocaust Denial on Trial) which contains a complete archive of the proceedings of Irving v. Penguin UK and Deborah Lipstadt. It also provides answers to frequent claims made by deniers.
She has received numerous Honorary Doctorates and teaching awards, including Emory's student government association's award for being the teacher most likely to motivate students to learn about new and unfamiliar topics and the Emory Williams award, for her courses on modern Jewish and Holocaust studies.
She holds a Presidential appointment to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council (from Presidents Clinton and Obama) and was asked by President George W. Bush to represent the White House at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. At the US Holocaust Museum Lipstadt chairs the Committee on Antisemitism and State Sponsored Holocaust Denial.
Professor Lipstadt was an historical consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and helped design the section of the Museum dedicated to the American Response to the Holocaust. On April 11, 2011, the 50th anniversary of the start of the Eichmann Trial Dr. Lipstadt gave a public address at the State Department on the impact of the trial.
