Bob Ryan Biography

Bob Ryan is an American sportswriter and a retired columnist for the Boston Globe, where he covered all of Boston's sports teams since 1968. Ryan's work appears semi-regularly in the newspaper and he is a regular panelist on ESPN's Sunday morning roundtable, The Sports Reporters, and Pardon the Interruption.

Well known for his famous stories covering the Boston Celtics in the 1970's, Ryan developed a close relationship with the Celtics organization. He was promoted to general sports columnist in 1989 and covered 20 NBA finals, 20 Final Fours, nine World Series, five Super Bowls, the last seven Olympics and many other events during his time at the Globe.

In 2017, Ryan launched his own podcast called "Bob Ryan's Boston Podcast." Into its 3rd season as of this writing, Bob has hosted many legendary Boston athletes from Larry Bird, Steve Grogan, Danny Ainge, Troy Brown, and Dave Cowens to name a few. Many coveted local and national sportswriters, and other well-known sports figureheads along the likes of former NBA commissioner David Stern have been guests as well.

Ryan has received a number of awards for his sportscasting including four National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association National Sportswriter of the Year, the 1996 Curt Gowdy Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame, the 2000 Associated Press "National Sportswriter of the Year," the 2006 Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism, and the 2015 PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing. He has also been inducted into the College Basketball Writers and New England Basketball Halls of Fame.
